How to respond to a 4-star review

A 4-star review is a happy customer with a small note. The reply should thank them and quietly show you heard the note. Never ask them to change the rating.

The reviews below are made up. Change names and details to match what really happened before you post anything. Draft one for your real review with the free generator.

Template.

Thank you, [name]. So glad [the good part]. You're right about [the small issue]; [what you'll do or why it happened, in one line]. Hope to see you again.

Things that go wrong on 4-star replies.

  • Ignoring the criticism. They mentioned it for a reason, and other readers saw it too.
  • Over-apologising. A 4-star review isn't a complaint. One line on the issue is enough.
  • "What could we do to earn 5 stars?" It reads as pressure. Just fix the thing.

Examples

Reviews and replies.

  1. 4-starLoved it, a bit loud

    Review (example)

Food was excellent, especially the pork belly. Only downside was how loud it got by 8pm.

    Example reply

Thanks for coming in, and glad the pork belly landed. Fair point on the noise, it does get lively after eight. If you'd like a quieter night, the window tables before 7 are your best bet.

Why it works: Agrees with the note and gives a useful tip instead of an excuse.

  2. 4-starGood stay, slow check-in

    Review (example)

Lovely room and spotless. Check-in took a while though.

    Example reply

Thank you for staying with us, and for noticing the housekeeping, I'll pass it on. Sorry about the wait at check-in. We've added a second person at the desk on busy afternoons.

Why it works: Credits the team, owns the wait in one line, names the fix.

Questions

Common questions.

Is it okay to ask a 4-star reviewer to update their review?
Don't. It can feel like pressure, and Google's policies prohibit incentivising reviews. Fix the issue and let future reviews show it.
